Al-Anon: an organization dedicated to helping the families of alcoholics through a group support structure and 12 step system.

Ala-Teen: an organization dedicated to helping dependents of alcoholics through a support group structure and 12 step system.

Alcoholics Anonymous (AA): an organization dedicated to helping alcoholics through group support and the 12 step system. AA is not successful as a singular intervention for teens, but is commonly used in conjunction with other therapies.

Fetal Alcohol Syndrome: a collection of debilitating features that occur in some children whose mothers drank heavily during pregnancy.

Inpatient Treatment: Treatment for an addiction that takes place in a controlled environment such as a hospital. The patient is checked into the hospital and remains there until treatment has ended.

Narcotics Anonymous (NA): a support group designed to help people recovering from a drug addiction. NA typically uses the AA 12 step program.

Outpatient Treatment: Treatment for an addiction that takes place without the patient being checked into a hospital or treatment center. Often, it involves several hours of therapy per day scheduled around the patient's normal daily activities.

Student Assistance Program: A school-sponsored set of intervention and prevention activities designed to help students maintain their mental health and stay drug free.
