Alternative Student-Teaching Assignments

Great Britain? A Navajo Reservation? Inner city Chicago? These are just a few of the possible locations for student teaching experiences. In alternative programs, individuals can student teach in other countries, inner cities, or in remote areas of the United States.

The attraction of these programs is that they offer the opportunity to both student teach and to have a cross-cultural experience. Laura Dalheim, who student taught in England for 10 weeks, said, "My experience was challenging and rewarding. The students were excited to have an American teacher and it gave me a chance to see how another educational system works." Universities generally have certain programs that they work with. Starting with the Teacher Education office of a university is the best way to find out about these programs.
