Teacher Talk Teacher Forum
The following sections (Sex Education Curricula, Homophobia, A.I.D.S., and
Dealing with Sex Issues in Any Classroom) are adapted from the first Teacher Talk
Teacher Forum. We invited five educators to discuss sexuality issues that arise in the
schools. We expected a lively debate about the role of abstinence and contraception in
sexuality curricula, but it did not turn out this way. Instead, there was a consensus
on understanding students' needs for compassion and careful guidance in helping them
make respectful, thoughtful choices about sexuality. We hope these highlights will
give you some useful insights into how sexuality issues may manifest themselves in
the secondary classroom. A videotape of this forum is available in the School of
Education Library, Indiana University, Bloomington, IN.
