In the last issue we asked: What do you think? How can beginning teachers show they are caring while maintainig order in the classroom? We received several responses from teachers. Here are some common themes:
Teachers need to pay attention to the bodies in front of them and their needs. The whole child needs to learn things, not just the cognitive side. Find out early what the bodies in front of you are like, and their learnig styles. Peter Hart, 6th grade mathematics instructor, Rye Country Day School, Rye NY
In my classes, I like students to feel comfortable. I try to create an atmosphere where they can trust me and bring a lot of themselves into assignments. If I am enthusiastic and passionate about what I teach, it helps get interest. I learned the easiest way to lose control of my class was to lose my temper, so I try to avoid that. Sara Edwards, 6th grade language arts, Rye Country Day School, Rye, NY
I didn't like Latin in high school, and I try to keep that in mind when preparing my classes. I also use a lot of humor and do anything to get them to understand the lesson. As a teacher, I need to look at it from their point of view. Carl Lenhert, Latin and Greek instructor, Bloomington H.S. North, Bloomington,IN
