It is not easy to find a good balance between the students liking you and discipline. Consistent discipline is more important that the students liking you. If you create an environment that has consistent discipline and is conducive to learning the students will like and respect you because of that.
I am just finishing up my student teaching stint in two weeks. The students like me but I feel that discipline has slipped as a result. Familiarity breeds contempt. The students soon learn how far to push you without getting in trouble. Sometimes you have to pull in the reins on the students to achieve the right mix of discipline and learning. This will come with trial and error. Don't be afraid to fail in this area. Your Cooperating Teacher has had many years of experience in this area. She already knows what levels of noise are acceptable. You do have to remember that you are there for every student and every student is not going to like you no matter what you do! Good luck!
